Threadline
Help & support

A little help.
Keep going.

Start fresh or bring a conversation with you. No ChatGPT account or extension is needed to use Threadline itself.

Sign in and get started

  1. Choose Open Threadline. If you are already signed in, your workspace opens.
  2. Otherwise, sign in or create an account with your email and a new Threadline password—not your email password. New accounts must verify their email using the link we send.
  3. Start a conversation, or choose Import ZIP or JSON to bring in existing chats.

Each account has its own workspace. Signing up does not import chats or share anyone else’s files. Check the email at the bottom of the sidebar; use Sign out on shared devices to return to the landing page.

Password and email verification

On the sign-in page, enter your email and choose Forgot password?. Open the newest reset email, follow its link, and set a new password. You can use Show to check what you typed.

For a new account, open the verification email before signing in. Check Spam if it has not arrived. If you received a setup invitation, follow that email’s link. Still stuck? Contact support—never send your password.

Import a ZIP or JSON export

  1. Keep a copy of your ChatGPT export. In Threadline, choose Import ZIP or JSON and select the export.
  2. Choose the conversations you want, review the selection, and confirm. Unselected chats stay on your device.
  3. Let organization finish, then open a topic or the full conversation.

If interrupted, return to the import dialog’s Unfinished imports section to resume or discard. Duplicate protection helps avoid importing the same chat twice. More options → Clean up repeated imports can exclude repeated copies while keeping them recoverable.

An original export is not a backup of later Threadline replies, files, or corrections. Use a Threadline backup to keep those too.

Capture an open ChatGPT chat

Threadline Conversation Bridge is an optional Chrome extension. You can start fresh or import ZIP/JSON without it. View in Chrome Web Store ↗
  1. Open the extension’s Chrome Web Store page, choose Add to Chrome, and pin Threadline Conversation Bridge.
  2. Sign in to Threadline with the account you want to save to. Then open the ChatGPT conversation you want to capture.
  3. Click the pinned extension, then Capture or sync this chat. It starts at the latest message; scroll upward as older messages load, then choose Review.
  4. In Threadline, review the message count and any missing-history warning, then confirm what to save.

A completeness warning means the full history could not be verified—not that missing messages were recovered. Keep the original chat and review before importing. Capture again to review new messages: sync is manual and one-way, not automatic.

ChatGPT attachment labels may be captured, but not the original attachment contents. Interactive widgets do not run in Threadline. Keep the original chat for those.

Connect Claude or ChatGPT

Connect Threadline to Claude or ChatGPT to save notes and exchanges into your projects, and to recall or catch up on them from there.

  1. In Claude or ChatGPT, add the Threadline connector, then sign in to Threadline when it opens.
  2. On Threadline’s approval page, tick the projects the assistant may use and choose Read and save or Read only. With two or more projects, pick a default for new chats or leave Ask me which project.
  3. In a chat, say things like “save to Threadline: exam moved to Tuesday”, “save this exchange to Threadline”, “what did I decide about pricing?”, or “catch me up on Fall 2026”.

Saving on request or automatically: Threadline from the Claude or ChatGPT directory saves only what you ask. If you added Threadline to Claude with the automatic-filing link, Claude keeps chats where you use Threadline in your project and starts its reply with the topic when the subject changes. Say “stop filing” to pause it in a chat.

In the sidebar, Connected assistants shows each assistant and its projects. There you can share another project, stop sharing one, choose the default project, turn automatic filing on or off, or disconnect. Disconnecting stops access at once, but what an assistant already showed stays in its own chat history.

Files, images, and citations

Use the composer’s + control to add a supported PDF, text, Markdown, or image file. Images need your permission for AI analysis. Scanned PDFs are not analyzed.

Open citations to check the original file or PDF page. AI answers and image descriptions can be wrong; verify important details. Removing a file also removes its searchable text, but not answers that already quoted it.

Back up and recover your work

  1. Open Manage projects → Backup & restore.
  2. Download a project as a .threadline file. It includes saved chats, replies, topic organization, later corrections, recovery history, and uploaded project files with saved text and citations.
  3. To recover it, select the backup to restore. This creates a separate project in the signed-in account; it does not replace existing projects or reorganize the backup with AI.
Keep the file secure: downloaded backups are not encrypted. Anyone with the file can read it or restore a copy. They contain no sign-in credentials or service API keys, but do include sensitive content you saved.

Save a fresh backup after important changes. Only that copy’s saved information can be recovered—not changes made afterward, deleted files, other projects, or ChatGPT attachments never uploaded to Threadline. Previously quoted context remains in saved answers. Oversized backups are refused, not shortened.

If a restore is interrupted, choose the same file again within 24 hours to resume. Expired temporary copies are removed when you next start a restore. Retrying a completed backup opens its existing restored copy instead of creating another duplicate.

Automatic service backups

Threadline also makes encrypted daily database and file backups for operator-led recovery. We keep the seven most recent successful copies and check recovery in an isolated destination before replacing live data. These copies stay within Netlify; they do not protect against loss of the whole hosting account or guarantee uninterrupted service. Keep your own downloads for independent recovery.

Correct, undo, or delete

  • Why here? changes a message’s topic without rewriting its text.
  • Report a problem saves a private category and reply reference. It does not send a support email or change memory. You can undo the report; use Write a correction to explain what future answers should use.
  • More options → Organize topics → Recent combinations → Undo reverses a combination while no newer changes conflict.
  • Manage projects → Delete removes the project and its files from active storage. There is no one-click deletion undo. An earlier backup can restore what it contains as a separate project.
  • Getting started & your data → Delete your account deletes every project, chat, note, file and assistant connection, then your sign-in. Type your account email to confirm. Download backups first; this can’t be undone.

Your original ChatGPT conversation stays unchanged. Deleting a project does not erase backups you downloaded or shared. See privacy and retention details for service copies and temporary data.

Tell us what you tried and what happened. Include your extension version if relevant. A screenshot with private details hidden can help.

Do not include passwords, private backups, or sensitive chat contents. For account access, export, correction, or deletion requests, we may need to verify ownership.
